Can't Set Up Math or Physics Word Problems? How to Translate English Prompts into Equations Step by Step
Stuck staring at a blank page on algebra inequality, system of equations, or projectile motion word problems? Learn how to translate English constraints into equations on Android.
Figure 01 · Mapping English Constraints to a System of Equations
Most STEM students do not fail word problems because they forgot how to solve for x. They get stuck because the homework gives them a four-sentence paragraph about a tutoring budget, a two-solution chemistry mixture, or a ball launched off a cliff, and they do not know how to write the very first equation on a blank sheet of paper. Pointing a basic equation camera app at the page does not help either, because there is no algebraic equation on the paper to scan yet.
Why word problems feel harder than symbolic equations
When your teacher hands you a sheet of twenty symbolic equations, the structure of the math is already visible. A quadratic has an x² term; a derivative has a d/dx operator.
Word problems hide that structure inside ordinary English clauses. Every STEM course uses its own shorthand phrases to smuggle mathematical constraints into a sentence:
- Inequality word problems: Phrases like “at most $120”, “no more than”, or “within a budget of” translate to ≤, while “at least”, “a minimum of”, or “no fewer than” translate to ≥. Flipping that direction sign in Step 01 ruins the boundary check even if your arithmetic is spotless.
- System of equations word problems: Mixture, rate-time-distance (d = rt), and ticket-revenue problems give you two unknowns (x and y) and two separate totals. One sentence usually constrains the raw quantity (such as x + y = 500 mL total solution), while the second constrains the weighted value (such as 0.15x + 0.40y = 125 mL pure acid).
- Physics projectile motion and kinematics problems: Words like “dropped from rest” secretly mean v₀ = 0 m/s, “reaches its peak height” means vertical velocity v_y = 0 m/s, and an angle “above the horizontal” requires splitting initial velocity into v₀ cos θ and v₀ sin θ before touching a kinematics formula.

How word problem solver tools compare on Android
If you are stuck on a word problem at 11 PM, you have a few ways to get unstuck.
You can search the exact text of the question on Google or a homework forum, which works for static textbook questions, but fails when online portals like DeltaMath, WebAssign, or ALEKS randomize the numbers for every student. You can use a symbolic app like Photomath or Mathway, which works once you already have the equation written down, but locks word-problem steps behind a recurring monthly subscription.
Stemulus takes a different approach on Android: every check in our Word Problem & Calculus Solver, Physics Solver, and Chemistry Solver dedicates Step 01 to translating the English sentences into defined variables and governing equations, and then checks the final arithmetic by substituting the result back into that setup.
A 4-step system to translate any STEM word problem into equations
Whether you are working on paper homework or checking your setup with the Stemulus Homework Scanner App, follow this sequence on every word problem:
Step 1: Write down the target unknown and its units first
Read the final question mark in the paragraph before looking at the numbers. Write down Let x = ... (and Let y = ... if two things are changing) along with the exact unit, such as hours, milliliters, meters per second, or moles. Half of all system-of-equations mistakes happen because a student forgets whether x represents the number of items or the dollar price per item.
Step 2: Map each English clause to one mathematical relation
Break the paragraph into separate clauses at every comma, conjunction, or period:
- For linear inequalities: Write the fixed starting cost plus the per-unit rate on the left, the budget or capacity cap on the right, and match the inequality symbol (≤, ≥, <, or >) to the constraint phrase.
- For two-variable systems of equations: Write Equation 1 for the simple count or volume total (x + y = Total), and Equation 2 for the rate, percentage, or dollar value (Rate₁ · x + Rate₂ · y = Weighted Total).
- For physics kinematics and projectiles: List your knowns (
v₀,v,a,Δx,t) in SI units first, converting centimeters to meters and grams to kilograms before choosing between v = v₀ + at, Δx = v₀t + ½at², and v² = v₀² + 2aΔx.
Step 3: Scan the prompt in Stemulus to check Step 01 before solving
If you are unsure whether your initial equation or inequality direction is right, snap a photo of the word problem in Stemulus on Android (or type it in). You see your captured problem in a preview first at zero credit cost. Enter your tentative answer if you have one, and tap Check Problem.
Compare your scratch paper directly against Step 01 on the numbered solution sheet. Once the problem is solved in Step 02 and Step 03, Stemulus substitutes the solved values back into the original equation or inequality where supported to confirm the math holds.
Step 4: Practice the setup using Hint 01 (without spoiling the answer)
Reading a finished word-problem solution always feels obvious in hindsight. To make sure you can set up the next one on your own during a quiz:
- Save the word problem to an Assignment in Stemulus and mark it Still stuck.
- Open the AI STEM Study Guide & Practice Generator and start a 3-question Practice Round.
- On each new word problem, try writing the equation on paper first, then tap Reveal Hint 01. Hint 01 gives you the variable definitions and equation setup while keeping the final numerical answer hidden so you can finish the algebra yourself.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Why do camera calculators like Photomath fail on math and physics word problems?
Basic camera calculators are built to recognize printed equations that already exist on the page, such as 3x + 5 = 20. When a homework problem is written as a multi-sentence paragraph about a budget inequality, a mixture ratio, or a projectile launch, pure equation scanners either fail to read the text or lock textbook solutions behind a subscription.
How do I know whether a word problem needs one equation, a system of equations, or an inequality?
Count the unknown quantities and check the constraint verb. A single unknown with a phrase like 'at most', 'no more than', or 'at least' requires a linear inequality. Two unknown quantities with two distinct totals (such as total volume and total acid concentration, or total tickets and total revenue) require a system of two equations.
What is the best word problem solver app with steps on Android?
Stemulus on Android scans printed or handwritten word problems across Algebra, Calculus, Geometry, Physics, and Chemistry. Step 01 explicitly translates the English prompt into variables and equations, and built-in Practice Rounds let you reveal Hint 01 to check your setup without spoiling the final answer.
